I am currently working on my master’s thesis, which focuses on the chemotaxis of Phaeobacter inhibens, one of the amazing members of the marine Roseobacter clade. Chemotaxis is the ability to respond to chemical gradients and is genetically encoded, though not yet fully understood. In a previous life, I worked for many years as a pharmaceutical TA in public pharmacies and sterile labs. I was studying molecular biology in parallel, but had to put that on hold for now. I have always wanted to return to it and combine it with my passion for the ocean. After completing my Bachelor’s degree in the field of ecology on the island of Helgoland, I rediscovered my fascination with the world of microorganisms. I now want to gain a deeper understanding of their ability to sense their environment. I hope to connect my insights to the interactions of bacteria with other organisms of any size and their contributions to whole ecosystems. When working, I like to dive deep into the very details, often finding myself hyperfocused in a rabbit hole. To counterbalance this, I do a lot of sports, which clears my mind. I love travelling and I’m always in for a good movie!
